Air Fryer Sandwich Recipes

While I know PB&J’s are quite possibly one of the most standard recipes to exist, there is something about air frying them that completely re-invents them, making it unique and fun all over again. We’ve been nothing short of obsessed with these sandwiches at my home — enjoying them for lunches, dinners, and desserts!

The bread gets perfectly crisp and crunchy on the outside while the fillings get delightfully gooey inside. I can’t wait for you to try out one (or even all four!) of these sandwiches and be forever converted to using the air fryer when making a PB&J!

Air Fryer Sandwich Ingredients

  • Bread. The bread makes all the difference! We want to use thick-sliced bread like Texas Toast. This particular type of bread is sliced thicker than regular sandwich bread– which we’re relying on. If the bread is too thick, the fillings won’t get gooey; too thin, and the sandwich will be flimsy. Aim for bread sliced about 1-inch thick.
  • Softened butter. It’s important the butter is thoroughly softened so it spreads easily without mashing up or flattening the bread. Plus, we want an even layer of fat to ensure the perfect bread toasting. See “quick tip” below.
  • Fillings. It may seem like a lot of peanut butter and/or jelly (or marshmallow fluff), but with the thicker bread, it’s important to avoid losing the fillings in the sea of bread!
  • Banana. For the Air Fryer Sandwich recipes that call for a banana, you want a ripe but firm banana. If the bananas are overripe, they’ll get a bit mushy when air fried.

QUICK TIP

Here’s how to soften butter quickly: Unwrap butter and place it on a plate. Then, fill up a wide liquid measuring cup with 1 cup of water. Microwave the water for 2 minutes or until really hot; then pour out the water and quickly dry the cup. Invert the hot measuring cup on top of the butter. Let stand for about 5-10 minutes.

How To Make An Air Fryer Sandwich

Making a PBJ may be pretty straightforward, but when it comes to air frying it, there are a few tricks to the trade. The full recipe is below, and here are a few of our top tips to make the best possible sandwich:

  • Spread softened butter to the very edges, ensuring good coverage for the perfect crispy exterior.
  • Don’t skimp on the fillings — we don’t only want to taste the bread!
  • As far as air frying goes, we use, love, and recommend this Air Fryer (affiliate link). Air fryers do vary a bit from brand to brand, so the timing for sandwiches may need to be slightly tweaked for your specific model. Also keep in mind that after the initial air fry, the machine is warmed up and will cook each subsequent Air Fryer Sandwich a bit quicker.

Air Fryer Sandwich FAQs

1Can you cook a sandwich in the air fryer?

Absolutely! You just want to make sure there is an even coating of fat (butter) on the bread to get a nice crisp exterior while air frying. Don’t skip the butter!

2At what temperature should I air fry a sandwich?

We air fry the sandwiches at 400 degrees F.

Adjust temperature if needed (not all air fryers are the same).

3Can I put a foil-wrapped sandwich in air fryer?

You can, but this defeats the purpose a bit — you won’t get the nice crisp exterior on the bread if the sandwich is in foil.

4How do you keep bread from flying around in an air fryer?

We’ve never had a problem with bread going wayward if using Texas Toast. However, if using a different or more flimsy bread, you may want to attach the sandwich and secure it with toothpicks in the corner.

5What is the Air Fryer Sandwich cooking time?

We like these sandwiches best at 4-5 minutes!

Instructions

  • Read Note 3 For Air Frying Trouble-shooting.

  • PB&J: Lay out the 2 pieces of bread; spread peanut butter on one side and jelly on the other. Sandwich the two together. Spread softened butter in an even layer, covering the outer sides of the bread (both sides). Place in air fryer basket and air fry at 400 degrees F for 4-5 minutes. Let slightly cool, slice in half, and enjoy!

  • PB HONEY & BANANA: Lay out the 2 pieces of bread; spread peanut butter on one side, top with thin slices of banana, and then drizzle honey evenly over everything. I also like to add a teeny pinch of salt. Add the top piece of bread to sandwich together. Spread softened butter in an even layer, covering all of the bread outsides (both sides). Place in air fryer basket and air fry at 400 degrees F for 4-5 minutes. Let slightly cool, slice in half, and enjoy!

  • NUTELLA & BANANA: Lay out the 2 pieces of bread; spread Nutella on one side and then top with thin slices of banana gently pressing the banana into Nutella. Add top piece of bread to sandwich together. Spread softened butter in an even layer covering all of the bread (both sides). Place in air fryer basket and air fry at 400 degrees F for 4-5 minutes. Let slightly cool, slice in half and enjoy!

  • PB MARSHMALLOW FLUFF: Lay out the 2 pieces of bread; spread peanut butter on one side and marshmallow fluff on the other. Sandwich the two together. Spread softened butter in an even layer, covering the outsides of the bread (both sides). Place in air fryer basket and air fry at 400 degrees F for 4-5 minutes. Let slightly cool, slice in half, and enjoy!

Recipe Notes

Note 1: Texas Toast: The bread makes all the difference! We want to use thick-sliced bread like Texas Toast. This particular type of bread is sliced thicker than regular sandwich bread– which we’re relying on. If the bread is too thick, the fillings won’t get gooey and, too thin, the sandwich will be flimsy. Aim for bread sliced about 1 inch thick.
Note 2: Butter: Don’t skip it! The sandwiches need a layer of fat to air fry to a beautifully crisp sandwich!

  • Here’s how to soften butter quickly: Unwrap butter and place it on a plate. Then, fill up a wide liquid measuring cup with 1 cup of water. Microwave the water for 2 minutes or until really hot; then pour out the water and quickly dry the cup. Invert the hot measuring cup on top of the butter. Let stand for about 5-10 minutes.

Note 3: Air frying: If using a different bread than Texas Toast, you may need to press 2 toothpicks in the two corners of the sandwich to ensure the bread holds together firmly and doesn’t shift apart as it cooks. Air fryers do vary a bit from brand to brand, so the timing for sandwiches may need to be slightly tweaked for your specific model. Also keep in mind that after the initial air fry, the machine is warmed up and will cook each subsequent sandwich a bit quicker. We find the sandwiches fry best if there is only one cooked at a time.
Note 4: Calories will vary based on bread and which toppings you choose. We calculated calories for the Peanut Butter and Jelly version.
