BETHEL — After six years in the mobile food business, the owners of a popular area food truck specializing in unique churros are preparing to open their first brick-and-mortar cafe right here in Bethel.

The Cinnamon Churros Café is moving into the space formerly occupied by Rita’s Italian Ice at 180 Old Hawleyville Road.

With the storefront slated to open on Friday, Cinnamon Churros owners Marcos and Leidimar Mendonca say they’ll be able to operate year-round instead of seasonally.

“The food truck season ends in the fall — but with the success of the Cinnamon Churros truck, we have placed ourselves in a position to continue serving our customers in the winter time,” the husband and wife duo said in an email.

The Mendoncas got into the food business about seven years ago after Leidimar Mendonca said her husband expressed a desire to make churros like the ones he enjoyed as a kid in Brazil.

Leidimar Mendonca said she owns a hair salon in Danbury and set up a tent outside, where her husband started making churros for her clients.

“They started talking about how amazing and fresh his churros were, and he started getting orders from different people,” she said. “We realized it could become a great part-time job for him and so we started to sell them at the Danbury Farmers Market.”

She said they purchased their first food truck about a year later, and bought a second one in 2020. That year, Cinnamon Churros was voted second-best food truck in a Hearst Connecticut Media poll of 123 mobile eateries in the state.

Leidimar Mendonca said the Cinnamon Churros Café in Bethel will have the same delectable offerings as the food truck, and then some.

“Our churros are made fresh from scratch and people can also customize them,” she said.

Not only will there be freshly-baked, uniquely-crafted churros available at the café, but patrons will be able to choose from a wide variety of filling and topping options — from caramel, chocolate, guava and peanut butter to sprinkles, nuts, various candies and fruits — to create their own.

“We’re passionate about unique types of food,” the Mendoncas said. “We’re going to have a variety of savory and sweet pastries, and a huge dessert selection.”

Churros won’t be the only thing on the menu.

Leidimar Mendonca said there will also be salads, sandwiches, pastries, and “varieties of Brazilian, European, Japanese and Latin desserts.”

The Mendoncas, who live in Newtown, said they’re looking forward to Cinnamon Churros Café’s grand opening and becoming part of Bethel’s food business community.

“The reason we decided to open Cinnamon Churros Café in Bethel was very simple: We love Bethel and the people are very friendly and supportive,” they said.

The Mendoncas say the café’s hours of operation will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
