Why I Love Easy Apple Cobbler

Why do I love this Easy Apple Cobbler Recipe?

  • It’s so easy! Yes it’s in the name but really, the prep for this dish is all of five minutes and then it gets put in the oven to bake. Dump the ingredients in the pan, stir, and you’re done.
  • It’s perfect for parties. This dump cake style dish only uses one pan which not only makes it easy to make but also easy to transport. Let the dish cool enough to put a lid or foil over top and transport right in the baking dish. It serves a crowd and no extra platters necessary.
  • Tastes homemade but uses cake mix and store bought apple pie filling!

How To Make Easy Apple Cobbler

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and lightly coat a 9×13 inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Combine the apple pie filling, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and apple pie spice directly into the baking dish. You can use a separate bowl to mix if you prefer but this cuts down on dishes! Stir to combine.
  3. Sprinkle the boxed cake mix over the apple pie filling in an even layer.
  4. Press the cake mix down into the filling a bit but don’t combine the two layers. This just helps the cake mix to absorb some of the liquid from the apple filling.
  5. Slice the butter into 16 slices and arrange over the cake mix.
  6. Bake the cobbler for 35 to 45 minutes, until golden brown.
  7. Serve fresh from the oven with your favorite vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on top. Enjoy!

Easy Apple Cobbler Recipe FAQs

Can I use different flavors of filling?

Yep! This easy recipe can be totally customized with your favorite fruit fillings. Try peach, cherry, blackberry, whatever you’re in the mood for!

Can I use fresh fruit for the filling?

If you want to use fresh apples as opposed to the canned pie filling you absolutely can. However we’ll need a couple extra ingredients. For the apples (I like granny smith or gala for baking) you’ll want to peel and slice or chop them into small pieces. Use my instructions from my Apple Crumble recipe then complete the recipe as directed, adding the cake mix and butter. Bake as directed.

Do I have to use a butter cake mix?

This recipe for apple cobbler with cake mix is super versatile and if you can’t find butter cake mix, yellow cake mix or vanilla cake mix will work beautifully!

Trish’s Tips and Tricks

  • You can check the cobbler at 25 minutes to make sure the cake mix layer isn’t looking too dry. If it is, press it into the filling and continue baking until golden.
  • You can make your own homemade apple filling with my homemade Apple Pie Filling recipe!
  • You can also make homemade Apple Pie Spice to keep on hand all year long.
  • Butter cake mix will give you the classic flavor typically associated with cobbler, however, yellow or vanilla cake mixes are delicious alternatives.

Ingredients

  • 15.25 ounces butter cake mix
  • 42 ounces apple pie filling 2 cans
  • 8 tablespoons salted butter
  • 1 ½ tablespoons lemon juice fresh is best
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice or ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly spray nonstick cooking spray into a 9 x 13 baking dish.

  • In a large bowl (or directly in the baking dish), combine apple pie filling, lemon juice, vanilla extract and apple spice. Stir gently to combine.

  • Evenly spread the apple pie mixture onto the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

  • Sprinkle the cake mix evenly over the top of the filling.

  • Use a spatula to gently press the cake mix down into the pie filling a bit, but not fully combining it. You want the cake mix to absorb a bit of the liquid from the apple pie mixture.

  • Slice the butter into 16 pieces and arrange evenlyl over the top of the cake mix.

  • Bake for approximately 35 to 45 minute, or until golden brown. After about 25 minutes check on the cobbler and if the top is looking dry, use the spatula to press the dry bits of cake mix down into the filling and continue baking until light golden brown on top.

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
