Why We Love this Toast Recipe

Cheese Toasties are a fabulously decadent breakfast, lunch, or snack in most parts of the UK. There are many variations between the United Kingdom countries, as well as regions within each country. A classic British Cheese Toastie is similar to an American grilled cheese sandwich, but also contains a bit of Worcestershire sauce, and sometimes herbs or mustard. It is then cooked in a grill pan to create defined grill marks.

However, an Irish Cheese Toastie (also called Cheese on Toast) is most commonly served open-faced. The cheese is mixed with egg to become extra puffy on top when baked!

We personally like this version because it feels significantly different than American grilled cheese, but is still a familiar and comforting food. It’s easy to make in the oven, and is perfect to curb a fatty-carb craving any time of day.

Ingredients you need: Eggs, aged cheddar, farmhouse bread, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best cheese for toasties?

Aged Irish cheddar is classic to make this recipe. However, any shredded melty cheese will do! Medium or sharp cheddar, pepper jack, and Colby jack cheese are also great options.

What is the difference between a grilled cheese and a cheese toastie?

A “grilled cheese” is typically a hot-pressed sandwich with cheese in the middle.

A toasty, however, is melted cheese on bread served open-faced. This recipe also includes a traditional blend of cheese plus eggs, Worcestershire, and mustard for much more flavor.

Is melted cheese on toast healthy?

There is a lot of tasty protein in this dish, thanks to the cheese and egg. But, because of the cheese and egg, you also have a good bit of fat and calories per serving.

Can I add meat to this recipe?

Sure! Place pieces of cooked ham, bacon, or sliced deli meats on the pieces of bread before adding the egg and cheese mixture.
