Brittani “Tudie” Hoffman is letting her imagination run wild at her new Clintonville bakery, which is giving some verve to everyday sweets.
Tudie’s Cookies & Sweets, which grew out of a home business in Gahanna, has opened in the former Pattycake Bakery storefront, 3009 N. High St.
Hoffman and her husband, Brett, planned to go in a different direction last year when they purchased a vintage camper they were going to convert into a food truck..
“We joked for a long time that this would be a good place for a bakery,” Hoffman said of the Clintonville space.
When they heard it was open, they signed the lease and sold the camper. Pattycake, a vegan bakery, has since relocated to 3870 N. High St., also in Clintonville.
Hoffman’s bill of fare, which changes frequently, includes a cinnamon oatmeal cream pie with cookie-butter frosting and caramel, s’mores cinnamon rolls and a strawberry pretzel cheesecake cookie.
An egg-and-cheese quiche is among a growing number of savory items.
Individual items are priced between $4 and $6.
Tudie’s also offers cold-brewed and hot coffee options from local roaster Florin Coffee.
Hoffman started her business in 2019 as a way to relax from her daily stresses as a labor-and-delivery nurse at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
“I would just throw in my ear pods and start baking,” she said.
She became a vendor at the Gahanna Farmers Market, where she still maintains a presence on Wednesdays.
Hoffman hired family friend Jeff Grubbs to help out in the kitchen. He is responsible for the individual pies.
“It’s so simple,” Grubbs said. “I’ve been doing it since I was a little kid.”
Alicia Hindman, also known as the Buckeye Lady, stopped by Tudie’s on June 8 to wish Hoffman a warm welcome while also purchasing a few items.
Hindman, who is to open a retail Buckeye Lady storefront June 19 at 4493 N. High St., said she’s familiar with Hoffman’s baked goods.
“They’re amazing,” she said. “I used to pick them up from her home.”
