New Jersey’s 25 greatest sandwiches, ranked

There are few greater pleasures in life than a good sandwich. And there are few places in the world with better sandwiches than New Jersey.

Hoagies. Subs. Sandwiches. Whatever you call them, New Jersey has them, and they’re delicious. But which ones are the best?

Food and Wine Magazine recently crowned the mozzarella and pepper sandwich from M&P Biancamano in Hoboken the state’s best sandwich — while admitting the Garden State has so many great Italian delis its hard to pick just one sandwich. This got NJ.com’s top sandwich savants, Peter Genovese and Jeremy Schneider, thinking about the top sandwiches in the state.

They didn’t consider hot dogs, burgers wraps, pitas, tacos or anything that vaguely fits the definition of a sandwich without actually being a sandwich (or at least being explicitly called a sandwich).

No, pickles aren’t on the sandwich. The sandwich is on the pickle. Elsie’s scoops the guts out of massive pickles and uses them in place of buns, making for briny, gluten-free wonders. You can get whatever you want on your pickle bun (including potato chips or Cheetos as a topping!) but it’s The Special that does it for me. Roast beef, Swiss cheese, coleslaw and Russian dressing on a big, salty pickle. It’s like a Pickle Joe. (JS)

Yes, Taylor ham/pork roll is New Jersey’s signature breakfast meat. And this sandwich would be great with that, too. But charred bologna? A cold cut throwback to youth, when Mom would make you sandwiches with the meat that can also be spelled baloney. Owner Mike Metzner used to eat bologna sandwiches with his grandfather, thus the name of this Polish-inspired sandwich. But it’s the latke that makes this sandwich a must, a crispy delicious potato pancake that is essentially a tastier hash brown in this equation. (JS)

It doesn’t get any more Jersey than a sausage and peppers sandwich. The state’s best can be found at Dentato’s, on the Seaside Heights boardwalk. Great meat and good roll add up to super seaside sandwich. (PG)

Fitting that a sandwich shop with a Prohibition-era name would have a sandwich named after maybe the most famous Prohibition agent who went after Al Capone. There’s nothing boozy about the sandwich, but the combination of turkey, roast beef, munster, roasted red peppers, coleslaw, cranberry aioli and horseradish is so powerful and delicious it should be illegal. If you’re willing to wait for the weekend (and wait on line) you won’t find many better breakfast sandwiches than this one. Scram has been a hit in Jersey City since it opened last year. It only sells its vaunted breakfast sandwiches on Fridays and Saturdays, and they sell out just about every time. The Ham bun with pineapple jam, gruyere and Béchamel sauce is decadent and delicious, savory and sweet and filling enough to make you want to go back to bed. (JS)

Korean fried chicken is all the rage, but don’t sleep on Korean cheesesteaks, especially the ones at Wich One. ”Fast casual Korean fusion” is the slogan. The Wich Korean Cheesesteak is a sweet combination of Korean style ribeye, mozzarella, spring mix lettuce and sauteed onions. There’s also a Wich Piggie sandwich with farm-raised pork, mozzarella, pickled veggies, lettuce and sauteed onions. So Wich one are you going to order? (PG)

Di’nics and John’s Roast Pork are the Philly roast pork legends, and it’s great to see Di’nics on this side of the river. The roast pork is made with special spices “that have been passed down for centuries.” Centuries? Whatever, it’s a great sandwich. (PG)

The Trinidad is no frills and no nonsense, much like the deli itself that serves it. But every friend I made in Westfield raved to me about Hershey’s, and one bite of this sandwich validated the hype. Incredibly fresh meats, served in heaping portions, with excellent toppings. I often struggle to pick between turkey and roast beef — my two favorite cold cuts — and this one has both, along with tasty Russian dressing on fresh bread. It’s similar to a Sloppy Joe, but with a submarine spin. (JS)

Voltaco’s, open since 1954, is a Jersey Shore legend. It’s a tiny shop teeming with old-school atmosphere. The Johnny’s Special combines home-cooked roast beef with sliced onions, melted provolone and horseradish cream. And I love places that throw in extra cups of hot peppers without you asking. (PG)

Italian subs are a dime a doughy dozen in New Jersey, but the Joe’s Italian combo at Joe Leone’s manages to stand out. It starts with great bread — I’ve lost count of the number of subs/hoagies I’ve eaten with substandard bread. The store is a wonderland of Italian meats, cheese, prepared meals, and more. Good luck not dropping a few large bills when you’re there. (PG)

The sandwich that started this whole ranking — named the best in the state by Food and Wine Magazine, which admitted that picking just one sandwich in a state full of amazing ones is an impossible task. We agree that it may not be the best, but it’s certainly up there. Some sandwiches are so overloaded with meats, cheeses and toppings that you don’t even know what you’re eating. There’s something beautifully simplistic about a sandwich containing just two things. The sharpness of the roasted peppers cuts through the fresh, creamy and luscious house-made mozzarella cheese (the best type of cheese). One of life’s great simple pleasures. (JS)

The state’s best bar grilled cheese? It’s no contest — the Nip-N-Tuck. How seriously does this cozy neighborhood bar take its grilled cheese? There’s a new one every week. My search for grilled cheese background led to this somewhat existential back-and-forth with the bartender the last time I was there:

“How long have you been doing the grilled cheese of the week?”

“Years.”

“How many?”

“Many.”

“How many combinations over the years?”

“Countless.”

The Nip-N-Tuck — no, they don’t do nose jobs — is a must-visit. (PG)

There’s so much great cheap eating in West New York and Union City I don’t know where to start. Dos Amigos — no official Facebook page or web site — is a Cuban food legend. The place is not much to look at, and it’s cash only, but with food this good why do you care? (PG)

“The world‘s best corned beef, pastrami and cheesecake” is the modest claim at Harold’s New York Deli, which also boasts the world’s largest pickle bar. The sandwiches are gigantic; the Junior, at $19.95, will feed you and several friends. (PG)

You can’t go wrong with any of the delectable bahn mis at Baguette Delite. The BBQ pork is incredible. The Vietnamese meatball sandwich is terrific. But I almost never venture from the lemongrass beef. The tenderness of the beef, with the perfect amount of citrusy sweetness from the lemongrass? It’s subtle enough to not overpower the sandwich, but enough to keep you chowing down. Factor in the crispness of the cucumber and carrots, the spice of the jalapeño and sriracha and the sweetness of the hoisin sauce? I am craving one just writing this. (JS)

Carmen’s Deli is the kind of place where specials are written on construction paper, and the smudged/tattered sandwich menu, taped to a wall, looks like it went through the sub wars. The Rose’s Special sub, with capicola, prosciutto, regular and sharp provolone, sopressata and roasted red peppers, is named after a former owner. I call it South Jersey’s best sub. Or hoagie. Carmen’s was one of ten finalists in our statewide best sub/hoagie shop showdown. (PG)

Montclair’s rich deli culture took a serious hit when Watchung Deli closed at the end of 2020 — I can think of at least three sandwiches I would have considered for this list — but anyone who knows Montclair sandwiches knows Belgiovine’s makes some of the best sandwiches in the food-obsessed town. Chicken grilled fresh for every sandwich (so don’t be surprised if it takes a while) topped with sharp provolone, broccoli rabe, long hots and arugula? Simple yet delectable, each flavor complimenting the other. The freshness of the chicken is key, a far cry from some places that put rubbery chicken breast on their sandwiches. (JS)

You can’t do a New Jersey sandwich list and omit the vaunted Sloppy Joe. Maybe even multiple Sloppy Joes. That’s how much New Jersey loves their take on the sandwich that most people think is tomato sauce and ground beef on a bun. It ain’t! At least not in Jersey. Town Hall Deli claims to have invented the New Jersey Joe, featuring two types of meat, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing and coleslaw on rye bread — an incredible combination. Town Hall’s version of the sandwich is cut into quarters on thinly sliced Pullman Rye, making it feel kind of like a fancy finger sandwich at a tea party. (JS)

A Camden bar serving great cheesesteaks? Must be Donkey’s Place, where you can hear and smell steak sizzling and onions popping on the grill. Boxer Leon Lucas bought the place in 1947; fans likened his punch to a mule’s or donkey’s, thus the name. Great divey atmosphere, and a must-stop on any cheesesteak pilgrimage. No less an authority than the late Anthony Bourdain declared Donkey’s cheesesteaks better than any in Philadelphia. (PG)

There’s good reason Pete named Andrea Salumeria the best sub shop in New Jersey back in 2016. Every sandwich at the tiny little Italian shop in the Jersey City Heights is incredible, with freshly sliced meat on delicious crusty bread — not to mention the sass from the deli workers making your sandwich. You can get several classic Italian sandwiches here, but it’s the Italian tuna that will make you question everything you thought you knew about sandwiches. It’s made with olive oil instead of mayo, making it much lighter and giving it a completely different taste. Don’t like tuna? Give this a try, it will likely change your mind. (JS)

The late Carl Ruiz, a Jersey chef and Food Channel celebrity, called this the nation’s best Cubano. He knew what he was talking about, having sampled 500 or so Cubanos in Tampa, Miami and elsewhere over the years. What makes La Pola’s Cubano special, according to Ruiz, is the hand-sliced ham and pork, and excellent bread, from Cuba Bakery in Union City. La Pola, an old-school haunt on Palisade Avenue with its diner-like counter and stools, made my list of the state’s best hole-in-the-wall restaurants. (PG)

If the college experience was a sandwich, it would be the fat sandwich. RU Hungry? at Rutgers made them famous, subs piled high with deep fried delights like chicken fingers, french fries, mozzarella sticks and more. The Fat Darrell features all three of those topped with marinara sauce. I remember the first time I had one on a visit to Rutgers in high school I felt like I was doing something, getting away with something. I didn’t think all these amazing treats could be together in one meal. They were. They are. It’s amazing. The diet starts tomorrow, let’s have a fat sandwich today.(JS)

I named this the state’s best Taylor ham/pork roll egg and cheese sandwich in my epic TH/PREC showdown, and it was not without controversy. The purists screamed, “It must be a fried, not scrambled, egg!’’ Sorry, I don’t play by the rules. Neither does this sandwich. Yellow American cheese, four slices of meat and a superb roll from Balthazar Bakery, and you have New Jersey’s best example of its iconic breakfast sandwich. True Salvage Cafe is undoubtedly the coolest spot in the state to get a TH/PREC. At first glance, it looks like a secondhand store, with cookbooks, classic rock LPs and old-time bicycles among the furnishings. (PG)

I wish I could treat New Jersey’s two most revered Sloppy Joe makers like a parent treats their children — “we love you both equally!” my parents often told my sister and I, when we all knew I was the favorite — but Millburn Deli does indeed make my favorite Sloppy Joe. The thickness of the rye bread, cut into triangles; the amount of Russian dressing and coleslaw, making the whole sandwich a delicious, sloppy mess. Don’t get me wrong, I love Town Hall Deli’s take on the sandwich — and heck, they say they invented it. But in my heart of sandwich hearts, Millburn Deli perfected it. (JS)

If I had to take one sandwich to the pearly gates, or my desert island, make it this one. The origins of Fiore’s legendary roast beef and mozzarella sandwich go back to around 1960, when the deli started offering a special sandwich each day — roast beef, sausage, tuna, Virginia ham. The roast beef and mozzarella became Fiore’s signature sandwich. Fiore’s looks like a vintage deli movie set — brick storefront, tin ceiling; fluorescent lighting; a display case filled with olives, roasted red peppers, mushrooms, and other specialties. A photo of Mother Teresa is wedged between sardine tins. There’s no website or official Facebook page — no surprise there. That roast beef and mozzarella sandwich? It’s available Thursdays and Saturdays only. (PG)

Chicken grilled fresh for every sandwich (so don’t be surprised if it takes a while) topped with sharp provolone, broccoli rabe, long hots and arugula? Simple yet delectable, each flavor complimenting the other. The freshness of the chicken is key, a far cry from some places that put rubbery chicken breast on their sandwiches. Town Hall Deli claims to have invented the New Jersey Joe, featuring two types of meat, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing and coleslaw on rye bread — an incredible combination. Town Hall’s version of the sandwich is cut into quarters on thinly sliced Pullman Rye, making it feel kind of like a fancy finger sandwich at a tea party. You can get several classic Italian sandwiches here, but it’s the Italian tuna that will make you question everything you thought you knew about sandwiches. It’s made with olive oil instead of mayo, making it much lighter and giving it a completely different taste. Don’t like tuna? Give this a try, it will likely change your mind. What makes La Pola’s Cubano special, according to Ruiz, is the hand-sliced ham and pork, and excellent bread, from Cuba Bakery in Union City. La Pola, an old-school haunt on Palisade Avenue with its diner-like counter and stools, made my list of the state’s best hole-in-the-wall restaurants. RU Hungry? at Rutgers made them famous, subs piled high with deep fried delights like chicken fingers, french fries, mozzarella sticks and more. The Fat Darrell features all three of those topped with marinara sauce. I remember the first time I had one on a visit to Rutgers in high school I felt like I was doing something, getting away with something. I didn’t think all these amazing treats could be together in one meal. They were. They are. It’s amazing. Yellow American cheese, four slices of meat and a superb roll from Balthazar Bakery, and you have New Jersey’s best example of its iconic breakfast sandwich. True Salvage Cafe is undoubtedly the coolest spot in the state to get a TH/PREC. At first glance, it looks like a secondhand store, with cookbooks, classic rock LPs and old-time bicycles among the furnishings.
