Fresh off the first of installment of “Taste of Auberge” which featured New York City chef JJ Johnson, Anguilla luxury hotel Malliouhana, Auberge Resorts Collection, continues to celebrate cuisine with multiple upcoming food events and collaborations. Next month, the property will participate in Anguilla Culinary Experience, a five-day international epicurean festival, and in July chef Nina Compton will take up residence there. Here’s what’s in store food-wise on the island in 2022:
A Small Island With Big Food Events
While Anguilla is a small island of just around 15,000 inhabitants, it has a mighty reputation when it comes to food. Often deemed the “Culinary Capital of the Caribbean”, there’s an array of eateries to choose from, from small beach shacks to high-end restaurant. Luxury property Malliouhana played a big role in bringing fine dining to the island when it opened in 1984 as Michelin star chef Jo Rostang launched the first high-end culinary program there. This year the property welcomes a new chef, Andrea Ferrandi, who will put his own spin on regional Anguillan and Caribbean cuisine, celebrating the incredible fresh catch from the surrounding sea along the way.
2022 also marks a special year for Malliouhana as it just launched a new program in March, “Taste of Auberge”, a culinary event with several chef residences and events across multiple days. Last month, Chef JJ Johnson brought his signature style of cooking which blends New York City and Caribbean flavors to Anguilla. During his time there guests enjoyed a beach bonfire with a live ceviche demonstration, a beach party featuring dishes like oxtail dumplings and vegan mushroom roti rolls, and a Sunday brunch serving chicken and waffles. The event was a celebration of food and also one of Black beverage entrepreneurs with Ten to One Rum and McBride Wines served at the events. If you missed it, there’s certainly much more happening in Anguilla.
Anguilla Culinary Experience
Anguilla has a beautiful collaborative spirit within the hospitality industry, and Anguilla Culinary Experience is symbolic of that. From May 11 to 15 Anguilla-based Chefs like Dale Carty and Manu Calderon plus U.S. chefs like NYC’s Jonathan Waxman will create feasts in properties like Zemi Beach, Four Seasons Anguilla, Belmond Cap Jaluca, Malliouhana and more. Locals and out of town guests alike will celebrate with cocktail parties and even learn how to make Anguillan staples like Johnny Cake. Aside from serving up delicious food, the event aims to inspire the island’s next generation of chefs by allowing them to learn from some of the greats of the business.
Nina Compton Helms Next Taste of Auberge
For those who missed the first installment of Taste of Auberge, there are more events to come this year, the next one being with Chef Nina Compton in July. Like Chef JJ Johnson, Nina Compton also has Caribbean heritage which makes the engagement particularly dear to her. “As a native of St. Lucia, I am extremely honored to be collaborating with them to share the traditions of my Caribbean roots infused with my passion for New Orleans flavors with guests and local community of the island,” she says.
With an array of events and illustrious chefs coming to Malliouhana and Anguilla, the island will surely maintain its status as one of the best places to eat in the Caribbean.
